Avery Wooley in the Cook Children's NICU

Avery Wooley was born 14 weeks early, weighing just 1 lb., 5 oz.

She spent 234 days in the NICU at Cook Children's fighting to survive.

She finally came home on oxygen and with a feeding tube and has fought every day of her life to be the thriving, energetic nine-year old she is today.

Tennis has been the family sport on both sides of her family, even going back to her grandparents on both sides, since her parents were her age. Her father, Shawn Wooley, a local tennis professional in Fort Worth and her mom, Kelly, is an avid tennis player and overall lover of the game.

Nine years later, Avery has discovered  her own love for the game.

This tournament was created to show our love and appreciation for the staff at Cook Children's for saving Avery's life, on multiple occasions, and for helping her become the thriving, energetic nine-year-old she is today.

The inspiration behind the Summer Scorcher: Avery's NICU Journey

A special shoutout to McLeland Tennis Center, this year's tournament host!

McLeland is one of Fort Worth's oldest tennis facilities, built in the 1960's, and underwent a large renovation, including resurfacing all the courts, updating the pro shop and more in 2017. They have 14 outdoor courts and 2 indoor courts with programs, drills and private lessons for all ages and levels.

We also want to say a HUGE thank you to all of our 2022 participants, sponsors and donors!

Thanks to you, we were able to break a new fundraising record for the Summer Scorcher of more a total of $100,000 raised for the NICU at Cook Children's since the tournament was founded.
